The Hunting Gun by Yasushi Inoue. Translated by Sadamichi Yokoo and Sanford Goldstein.1989 Peter Owen reissue, 72 pages. Inoue was a Japanese author best known for his master of historical fiction. According to the New York Times: "Inoue’s 1949 novella “The Hunting Gun” remains perhaps his best-known work outside Japan. Here three women speak in three letters addressed to the same man, the coolly self-assured ­Misugi — Shoko, his bewildered young niece; Midori, his defiant wife; and Saiko, his longtime lover, on the brink of suicide. As the women react to the revelation of illicit love, their perspectives are layered one atop another like the colors in a woodblock print."
