The Girls of Slender Means by Muriel Spark. 1963 Knopf, first U.S. edition, 176 pages. Muriel Spark was an acclaimed poet, critic, and fiction writer. Her humor and observation shone in every novel. Upon her death Alex Clark wrote in the Guardian, "You could argue that Muriel Spark's body of work was most effectively characterised as the study of charisma and the deceptions that can be carried out, almost unstoppably, under its auspices. As a novelist, she was preoccupied by the intersection between power and personality, which she represented, in what became trademark fashion, in a variety of puckish settings." Girls takes place in a fictional boarding house of sorts for women in post-war England.

Condition: Jacket in good condition, tanned, with some chips, book in good+ condition, black mark  on front boards

"Long ago in 1945 all the nice people in England were poor, allowing for exceptions."
