The Steet by Ann Petry. 1991 Houghton Mifflin paperback, first printing (c/r 1946), 436 pages. Petry was hugely influential in publishing the first novel that portrayed Harlem street life. Her novel was a literary and commercial success and enjoyed a resurgence with this reissue in the nineties. She published two other novels, stories, and children's books in her lifetime.
