According to Poetry Foundation: "Simic’s work defies easy categorization. Some poems reflect a surreal, metaphysical bent and others offer grimly realistic portraits of violence and despair." According to a review of Classic Ballroom in Ploughshares, "[H]is book features a number of fine poems in which the speaker himself assumes something of the innocence and dramatic autonomy of the spoon or knife of the earlier work."
