Duras was a celebrated French novelist, playwright, and writer, well-known for her novel The Lover, a story of a teenager falling in love with an older Chinese man. In her New York Times obituary: "The mysteries of love and sex consumed her, but she had no room for sentimentality in her works, or indeed, in her life." Destroy explores the romantic and erotic lives of two couples. Duras later turned the novel into a film.
