Great Granny Webster by Caroline Blackwood

Great Granny Webster by Caroline Blackwood. 1978 Picador edition, 96 pages. Blackwood was a British-Irish novelist, born in London, but raised in the family mansion in Northern Ireland. She was married to Lucien Freud and Robert Lowell. According to the New York Times obituary: "British critics noted the 'brilliant irony' and 'rather brilliant bitchiness' of her writing, comparing it with the work of Muriel Spark and Iris Murdoch, among others."  According to the NYRB on Great Granny: "This macabre, mordantly funny, partly auto-biographical novel reveals the gothic craziness behind the scenes in the great houses of the aristocracy, as witnessed through the unsparing eyes of an orphaned teenage girl."
