Duras was a celebrated French novelist, playwright, and writer, well-known for her novel The Lover, a story of a teenager falling in love with an older Chinese man. In her New York Times obituary: "The mysteries of love and sex consumed her, but she had no room for sentimentality in her works, or indeed, in her life."
