Mauprat by George Sand. 1977 first Da Capo paperback edition, 324 pages. George Sand was the pseudonym of the genius French author Amantine-Lucile-Aurore Dupin, born in 1804, who wrote more than seventy works. She started a socialist and activist newspaper when women had few rights, and remained a journalist and diarist while also writing fiction. She scandalized those around her by wearing pants and smoking cigarettes. Mauprat was Sand's third novel and depicts a heroine trying to Pygmalion her seemingly unredeemable cousin.
