Once in Vienna by Vicki Baum. 1945 Dell paperback edition, 255 pages. Baum was an Austrian writer who had a prolific career, publishing one book a year after her first was published. She was most famous for Grand Hotel and was also a boxer, which perhaps influenced her writing of independent women. Once in Vienna was her second novel originally published in 1920.
