Orlando by Virginia Woolf.  1942 first Penguin edition (c/r 1928), 192 pages. This is a Penguin Egyptian Edition, printed for Palestine. According to penguinfirsteditions.com "The EGYPTIAN PENGUINS were a small number of Penguin titles, which were published under licence in Egypt, for the troops in Cairo and Egypt[...] The Penguin Egyptian Editions were only produced for a short period - from 1942 to 1943. They were produced under licence - and the licence holder was W. Jeffrey Eady, Penguin's 'Representative in Egypt[...] Interestingly, many of the books were also printed in Egypt with different covers for sale in PALESTINE. At this stage we are unsure how many of the Egyptian books were also produced for the Palestinian market." According to this reference there are thirteen known titles printed for Palestine, not including Orlando. This copy has "Sale Price in Palestine" on cover and Jeffrey Eady stamp on title page. A new discovery? Features ads for British Defence Bonds on the back, information on NAAFI on the inside back cover.

Condition: Quarter inch of matte cover rubbed away at head of spine, chip on edges, water marks on spine and rubbing, foxing on cover, back cover coming away a bit at tail of spine, owner name on title page, exposed staples, in good- condition for a book that survived war eighty years ago and a world away. Please see photos for extent of condition.

"He---for there could be no doubt about his sex, though the fashion of the time did something to disguise it---was in the act of slicing at the head of a Moor which swung from the rafters."
